Windows Movie Maker
Windows Movie Maker is
probably already on your PC if your computer is fairly recent.
I think it comes with all of the computers with XP.
This is really all you need to get started. You can
upload your video from your camera and edit it here. You can cut parts
out, add music, add titles or subtitles. If you don't have a
video (or camera) you can simply add a few pictures to rotate at a
certain interval of time. You can then put music and text
with the pictures or you or someone else can narrate the video.
There is a record feature right in Windows Movie Maker where
you can push a button and start talking. I'm sure there are
fancier programs that have a lot more features, but really, I haven't
even bothered checking them out. For marketing purposes, your
main goal is to get the information out there quickly. Your
audience is going to be remembering what great information you gave in
your video, not how cool of an effect you have.
iMovie
Although recently I have been tempted to move in this direction, I am not a Mac user. iMovie comes with the newer Macs, just as WMM comes with the PCs. Seeing other fun features of Mac computers, I bet iMovie is pretty cool. In fact, I have a feeling it probably blows WMM out of the water. When I finally make the plunge to Mac, I will definitely update this area.
CamStudio
You may have heard of Camtasia. All the Internet gurus use Camtasia to make their demo videos. For example, if they want to show you how to use their new software, they can use Camtasia to record what is actually happening on their screen while they are using their computer. It's a great way to make a personalized video without actually having to appear on film. Camtasia, however is $300! Now, I'm sure it is worth every penny. I have heard many people rave about how great this program is. And since they have no affiliate program, I'm sure all of the testimonials are genuine. However, I have made a screen capture video myself using CamStudio. It is free. I'm not sure what Camtasia has that CamStudio doesn't, because I have never used Camtasia. Frankly, I don't want to know. I don't want to be tempted to go buy it. This is a quick way to get up a tutorial or demo of some sort. For instance, if you want to make a video about how to sign up for a PayPal account, you push record and then actually go to the site and walk through the steps. It will record everything your screen shows plus your voice.
If you already have Camtasia, here is a guide to help you make some of that $300 back
I will continue to add to this list....this should get you started.
